The burning 1,000,000 $ question: how much of ourselves is encoded in our birth chart ? It is all a matter of perspective.

It never fails to deliver. Every encounter with astrology questions our sense of identity, as well as the notion of fate and free will. Whether astrology works, and to which extent is a sulphurous topic that sparked many passions and wars throughout the ages. Perhaps because every time astrology is mentioned, an invisible question is silently asked: « who do you think you are ? And who are you, really ? ». It is the most intimate question one can ask and perhaps the only one that truly matters, according to some spiritual masters.

So who are we ? And to which part of ourself our birth chart refers to ? How much can it tell about our current life experiences, our soul journey, our divinity ? As we are starting to realise, the importance of our birth chart is highly dependant on how we view ourselves and on the point of view from which we evaluate our birth chart.

From the viewpoint of our divine self

Let’s say for instance that we carry at our core a spark of the divine. For the divine part of ourselves, I would go as far as to say that our current birth chart would be unimportant (so as everything else) and that our birth chart can be transcended when needed. From the perspective of our divine origins, nothing truly ever happens to us, no space, no time, nothing that can be accurately defined by words and our mental structure. This is perhaps why in certain Buddhist traditions, astrology is acknowledged, but not given much importance, as the goal is transcendence and enlightenment.

From the viewpoint of our soul

Now from our soul’s perspective, which likely underwent numerous incarnations, our birth chart might very well be just one of the many charts experienced. Say we went through a thousand human existences on average (a number in agreement with my experiences with mediumship and past life therapy), this means roughly 3’000 conception, birth and death charts as a soul incarnated as a human being. During all these existences, we experienced a huge variety of astral configurations, reactivating some past experiences and also engraving some of them in our astral body during these key transition points between one form of existence to another. What is referred to as our birth chart is simply our latest chart amongst many.

With this perspective in mind, I would go as far as to say that the field of karmic astrology tend to make a couple of over-extensions, if not mistakes. (i): First by assuming an equivalence between a configuration (say south node in Aries in the 10th house) and a precise type of past-life experiences, whereas they might be a vastitude of diverse karmic memories activated by such a configuration at different points in time in your life. (ii): Second by assuming an equivalence between our soul memories and our birth chart, whereas in reality, our birth chart might only refer to the kind of past-life experiences that are being activated in our current existence whereas the vast majority of our soul’s experiences lies dormant. Hence, it is very likely that our current birth chart doesn’t say much at all in terms of our soul experiences as humans. It may only point at which kind of set

From the viewpoint of our incarnated self

Finally, if we take the viewpoint of our current human existence, which is the viewpoint of the very most of us, how relevant is our birth chart at shaping our actual existence and persona ? This topic is have fuelled countless debates and researches in the field of astrology over thousands of years, and the answers to that question are still rapidly evolving. In a nutshell, while astrologers tend to agree that much information relative to our current incarnation is encoded in our birth chart, enough to shape the up and downs of a human life, the precise estimated amount varies according to a couple of factors.

Determinism vs free will

The first factor is our personal and collective take on the good old « determinism versus free will » debate. Generally speaking, ancient civilisations had a tendency to give fate more importance than we do in our modern western civilisation that emphasise free will, and this shows in the contrast between the ancient hellenistic approach to astrology, generally more deterministic and event-oriented, and the current modern western approach to astrology which emphasise psychological aspects, choice and willpower. Interestingly, Indian and Chinese astrology are generally more deterministic than modern western astrology as well, and seems to have retained to some extent some deterministic imprints.

My personal view on this topic is that albeit I am a firm advocate of free will, I do believe modern western astrology and society tend to over-estimate its importance quite a bit. To me, there is two distinct types of what we call « free will ». The first type is the free will of the persona only. You decide how you react and feel towards events in your life that are happening, and try to mitigate some undesirable aspects. To me, this is not really free will… It is like a goldfish in a jar deciding to turn either left or right, because well, he is in a jar. Then there is true free will exerted in alignment with our soul and divine self that allows us to transcend, against all odds, some aspects of life. This creates unforgettable moments when we get the feeling that some unknown forces give us unlimited strength to accomplish the task at hand and transcend our chart.

Astrology and other archetypes

The second factor is about assessing the relative importance of astrology amongst all the components that contributes to the shaping of an incarnated self. Generally speaking, the moment you are born, you have a set of genes from which you created your body and that carries the imprint of your ancestors, as well as a birth chart and some names given to you that numerologists can decipher to highlight key characteristics of your persona and genealogy. It would be foolish here to pretend astrology is the only factor through which your life is shaped: indeed, our genes and our names also influences our lives on a daily basis and more studies are required to assess the relative importance of each factor, and how they interact with one-another. Encouraging preliminary work have been performed combining these factors (human design and gene keys for genes and astrology; harmonic theory connecting numerology and astrology), and I wish to see more of it in a near future. However, as for now, we can only safely assume that astrology in one key component contributing to the interface between the soul and the current incarnated self.

Natal chart vs other charts.

The third factor is about the relative importance of the event of our birth chart. As previously said, as a soul, we probably went through many transitions of states (conceived, born, dead, rinse and repeat…), each transition being associated with a chart. Of course, if you are reading these lines, it is safe to assume that your most recent transition chart is that of your birth, but who is to say that it is our only active chart ? As a matter of fact, I have been working for some years on how to recover and make use of our conception chart, and I will say that our second most recent chart is definitely contributing as well to our existence, albeit in a more subtle fainter unconscious manner, but not less powerful. You can access this piece of research of mine here. As for other charts, (such as our third most recent chart, the death chart of our previous incarnation), I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t have an influence on us as well, albeit fainter and more diluted. After all, we carry all of our past in the « now ».

The evolving state of astrological knowledge

Finally the fourth factor is about the state of astrological knowledge. A discipline such as astrology, similarly to biology, psychology, and other « logy » evolves through time, depending on how much love, effort and attention it receives. It is safe to say that astrology suffered through the age, caught between religion, science, misbelief and selfish power struggles, with some variation across civilisations. As a result, some knowledge has been lost, distorted, kept in secrecy while some new knowledge has been created. Yet, we now live in exciting times as much progress in science has been made (astronomy, computer science) and the political and societal context, while not encouraging astrological research, won’t go head-on against it. This has triggered many famous astrologers, such as Robert Hand, to call for the development of a post-modern astrology integrating sound astrological theories developed across the ages and civilisations and confronting them with our actual human lives. All in all, we can therefore expect a huge improvement in astrological knowledge in the upcoming years, and as a result, reevaluate the importance of our birth chart relative to the unfolding of our lives.

Concluding thoughts

So, how much of ourselves is encoded in our birth chart ? If you have made it this far, you may agree upon the fact that it is not a simple question to answer, albeit an important one. The answer, as for now, is likely to be « enough to warrant our full attention and encourage further investigation ». Hopefully, significant progress will be made in a near future within the field of astrology as well as in other related disciplines to further improve our understanding of a human existence, and it is my wish, through the work published on this website, to contribute to such an understanding.
